Genetic identification of species involved in the illegal trade

overview

In order to support and strengthen national and international regulations pertaining to the commercialization and trade of marine species, we have undertaken various projects. These initiatives encompass a wide range of activities, such as determining the species composition of shark fins seized by different governments across Latin America, conducting DNA barcoding to identify seahorse species involved in trade in Ecuador, and employing molecular identification techniques to address the illegal commercialization of billfishes in the markets of Costa Rica, among other endeavors. Our multifaceted approach aims to ensure the protection and conservation of marine biodiversity while promoting sustainable practices in the region.
